Section Leader Information

Blue violin graphic with 'BG50' text below.

Fall 2026: ATTENDANCE Sheet

Sections are as follows: Violins, Violas, Cello, Contrabass, Rhythm (piano, electronic instruments), Percussion,  Clarinets (incl. Bass Clarinets), Bassoon, Oboe, Flutes (incl. piccolo, low flutes), Trumpets (incl. flugelhorn), Horns, Saxophones, Low Brass (incl. Tuba, Euphonium, Bass Trombone, Trombone), Soprano / Alto Voice, Tenor / Bass Voice.

Section leaders are chosen by the conductors of the orchestra and choir. Once chosen, they serve a term of a year and can reapply each year, but MUST reapply each year if they want to be considered. Section leaders must in good faith intend to attend all of the rehearsals, as well as any end of the year concerts scheduled.

Section leader job responsibilities:

Sections leaders serve as the primary point of communication between conductors, the orchestra coordinator, and their section. At this time, section leaders are also responsible for:

  • Maintaining attendance records weekly and assigning someone to take over if they have to miss a rehearsal.
  • Ensuring members are adhering to rehearsal etiquette standards
  • Ensuring part review is completed according to the schedule provided by repertoire team each season. This can be a collaborative process with other section members and does not need to be completed by only the section leader, but they are in charge of assigning people to do so.
  • Holding auditions for section-specific solos if needed.
  • Ensuring proper balance of parts by maintaining a record of who is playing what part.
  • Upholding the BGSO Code of Conduct within your section, and being a good example of rehearsal etiquette.
